Playing Sappho is the name of this website, and the Playing Sappho Project, which seeks to make the performance of Sappho’s poetry more accessible to all. This website describes my (Mary McLoughlin’s) process of building an ancient Greek Lyre -a Βάρβιτος (Barbitos) a lyre heavily associated with Sappho, and the process of me learning how to sing and play the songs of Sappho in accompaniment. This site is meant to serve as a guide to those who wish to do the same thing. May we all be well inspired by the Tenth Muse.

For a blog describing the how-to process of building a lyre, please consult the ‘Lyre/Lyric Blog’ page. For more information on who Sappho is, and why she is so amazing please go to the About page.

  3. I’m impressed, I must say. Seldom do I come across a blog that’s equally educative and interesting, and without a doubt, you’ve hit the nail on the head. The problem is something too few men and women are speaking intelligently about. I am very happy I stumbled across this in my hunt for something relating to this.|
